The Stages of Colon Diseases

In studies of diseases of the colon, the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system outlines the development of colon cancer in four stages and a fifth stage called the recurring stage. Stage 0 is the earliest and involves only the lining of the colon.

Resection surgery helps. In Stage III cancer has spread into lymph nodes but not to other organs. Resection and chemotherapy help. In Stage IV, cancer has spread to other organs such as lungs, ovaries and liver. Resection, chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are used. Stage V or recurrent cancer is the cancer that returns after treatment. Survival rates decrease down the stages.
